Preservation of Mountains – Your Responsibility

26 Jun 2018
|Comments are Off

The opening of route so early in season in 2018 was a positive sign for tourism, but it puts a grim reminder on the changing climate of the region. Due to lack of seasonal snowfall Spiti has experienced its driest winter in decades in 2018. So when you are here please make a vow to preserve this place as it is.

Few ways you can contribute and help Spiti

  1. Take back all your trash and dispose where proper recycling facilities are available – plastic waste, dry cells, etc
  2. Depend on reusable water bottles for drinking water. Use filtered water from hotels instead of plastic bottles.
  3. Do not waste water in hotels – the most precious commodity this year. It takes lot of effort from us to get your running water in bathrooms. Use half flush, close taps while brushing.
  4. Educate your friends, family, locals and everyone around you to do the same.

These small precautions will keep Spiti, this beautiful place on Earth, the way it should be for generations to come.

Donate your invaluable books

Dear Patron,

A lot of people when they visit little villages in Himalayas give money and chocolates to children. Money will be spent in no time and chocolates are consumed instantly. But any contribution in this beautiful land has to be of value and ever lasting. So we at Spiti Valley tours are introducing our gift a book program to our guests who are visiting Spiti Valley. As you know Spiti is located in such a remote region where we don’t get daily newspaper and magazines and the libraries are few and far between.

Back home we know a lot of you will be having old books be it comics, science, short stories or even novels that are useful for children. Instead of disposing them off, we request you to bring those books to Kaza and we will screen them and donate it to various libraries across Spiti.

We believe learning not only happens in school, not only through teachers, it also happens through everyone we meet and interact in our lives. It happens through television, comics, just by observing nature. There is no better contribution to the world than that of infinite knowledge.

Things to Bring

Some extra items to consider packing before your trip to Spiti –

  1. Weather appropriate gear – things can change quickly up there so always bring at least one set of warm clothes even in summer.
  2. Gifts for the locals – guests sometimes bring some small presents for the local village kids, usually they have less access to pencils and coloring books, sports equipment, things like that.  You will be very popular if you bring any kids stuff to hand out.
  3. Sunblock is also pretty rare up in the high mountains and the little kids tend to have very sun burned cheeks so if you pack too much sunblock, you can donate it at Key Monastery Old Peoples Home and the old ladies who take care of the village kids will be sure to give it out to all the little ones for you.
  4. Spare battery/chargers for your camera – there is usually quite a lot of people using the same charge stations so you might want to take precautions if possible.
  5. Your own water bottle – there are plenty of clean water refill points everywhere in the Himalayas and far, far too much litter.
