Wildlife Safari

snow leopard, wildlife safari

Because of our close links with the local community, we are able to bring you a unique high altitude Himalayan wildlife safari program which is available exclusively through Spiti Valley Tours and its partners.
Based around Kibber and Chicham villages, our safari works in partnership with a local community group -the Kibber Youth Council.

Their teams of conservation & ecology experts have been specially trained by researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Fund to assist in the
Snow Leopard census being undertaken in the area. To help inform local communities about conservation issues and the need to protect these
endangered species, the Kibber Youth Council operates an Educational Camp on the plateau beneath Mt. Kanamo 5964m.

Thanks to your friends at Spiti Valley Tours this outdoor education program is now available to other groups from outside of Spiti!

It is important to stress the exclusivity of this program which was only made available to us in the understanding that the tourism is of direct benefit to both local people and local wildlife and will help spread conservation awareness around the world.

Day 1: Manali—Kibber
Your guide will greet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. There will be no activity on your first day
of arrival as it is recommend for tourists to relax and undergo minimal exertion in order to get acclimatized
to the rarefied oxygen levels in this high-altitude Himalayas.

Day 2: Kibber—Campsite 1
Today we start early and hike up to our first campsite in the hills above Kibber. From this basecamp we will
take daily expeditions into the surrounding slopes.

Day 3: Campsite 1—Kanamo foothilss
Waking before dawn, we will go to the lair of the
local wolf pack and if we are lucky will see the
family leaving for the day. Afternoon we return to
camp for an afternoon ecology lesson from the
Kibber Youth Council experts.

Day 4: Campsite 1 - Campsite 2
Today we trek deeper into the hills to a deep
canyon running between Chicham and Kibber. We
will make camp in these canyonlands which are a
favorite terrain for snow leopard.

Day 5: Campsite 2—Chicham
Today we will reach the small hamlet of Chicham which lies opposite the 150m deep canyon from Kibber.
Here we will rest for the night, marveling at the many golden eagles which live near the village.

Day 6: Chicham—Manali
Today we return to Manali via Rohtang and Kunzum La Passes, taking the ’express’ route across the deep
chasm by using the cable and pulley mechanism known locally as a jula.
